Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs. It can be treated with antibiotics and is preventable.
Symptoms
A cough that lasts more than two weeks.
Coughing up mucus or blood.
Fever.
Night sweats.
Weight loss.
Feeling tired or exhausted.
Loss of appetite.
Chest pain.
Pain when breathing or coughing.
Transmission
TB spreads through the air when someone with TB coughs, sneezes, or spits.
How it's diagnosed
TB is diagnosed with a skin or blood test, X-ray, or sputum test.
How it's treated
TB is usually treated with antibiotics.
Who's at risk ?
People with lung issues, such as COPD or emphysema, are more vulnerable to TB.
Is it fatal ?
TB can be fatal without treatment, but it's rarely fatal in the United Kingdom.
