Before your Appointment
Please get in touch before making the appointment if:
You have a pain in or around the ear(s)
You have suffered with ear infection within the last 6 weeks
If you have had a perforated eardrum at any time in the past
If you suffer from tinnitus or dizziness
If you take any anti-coagulant medication
Unless you have a perforated eardrum, we would recommend using olive oil drops or earol spray first. In most cases, this causes lumps of ear wax to fall out of the ear canal. If this doesn’t happen, microsuction may then be a suitable option.
It can take more than one appointment to remove the wax. Prior to any appointment, olive oil ear drops or earol spray should be used at least 5 days beforehand. This makes micro suction as comfortable and effective as possible.
If you use hearing aids, please take advice before using olive oil as this can damage the hearing aid and there may be a better option to soften the wax
How it works
A pharmacist uses a microscope and a low-pressure suction device to gently remove earwax from your ear canal.
Benefits
Microsuction is a quick procedure that doesn't use water, so it's cleaner and more comfortable than other methods. You can usually go home the same day and should notice an immediate improvement in your symptoms.
When it's used
Microsuction is recommended for people who shouldn't have water in their ears, such as those with a perforated eardrum, a history of thick ear discharge, or who have had ear surgery.
Aftercare
After the procedure, you should avoid strenuous activity for 1-2 days. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if you experience any discomfort.
Side effects
Possible side effects include dizziness, discomfort, reduced hearing, infection, or trauma to the ear.
Who needs earwax microsuction?
Microsuction is used for people who should not have water in their ears, especially if they have:
Any serious complications from a previous irrigation with water
Had a middle ear infection (otitis media) in the last 2 months
Had any form of ear surgery, apart from grommets, (if they been in the ear for less than 2 years) and the patient is no longer having ENT (ear, nose and throat) appointments. This does not include people who have had ear correction surgery
A hole (perforation) in their ear drum or if there is a history of a mucous (thick) discharge from their ear in the last 2 years
A cleft palate (repaired or not)
A painful ear infection (acute otitis externa)
